Mail Gateway (MX) Service

DII provides enterprise class mail systems at several levels. By design, mail flow will originate from redundant mail gateways on the edge of the State network often referred to as MX systems. Through DNS services provided by DII Network Engineering (NE), the internet world knows to send to and accept mail only from these locations for domains that are located inside the state network.

 Purposes for gateway systems:

  • MX (or mail relay) services often are used to provide the redundant front end to an organization’s internal mail system.
  • It provides one centrally redundant path to send mail outbound to the internet from internal mail systems.
  • These systems provide a layer of stability and isolation from the back-end mail servers so that large scale attacks can be denied centrally at the edge without disruption of internal systems and operations
  • Agencies will use this service to send systems alerts and e-mail notifications that are not part of the State Exchange Mail system.
  • Branches and agencies that have their own SPAM gateways will utilize this relay system to deliver mail
  • Mail relay service for outbound mail for all state entities is by design available to all organizations. Inbound mail flow must be coordinated with DII:NE

To establish inbound mail flow a work order must be created in the Footprints Help Desk Support system. If you do not have an account on this system one can be created by contacting the DII helpdesk at 802-828-3544.
