Vt.Gov Domain Name Approval and Registration

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical naming system for computers, services, or any resource accessible via the Internet.  It translates domain names meaningful to humans into IP addresses meaningful to networking equipment for the purpose of locating and addressing devices worldwide.  Without accurate DNS information, browsers are unable to reach web sites and mail is unable to reach recipients.  Whenever a named resource is put into production, relocated, renamed or retired, DNS must be modified.

DII hosts Internet-facing DNS on ns1.state.vt.us and ns2.state.vt.us.  These servers are authoritative for vermont.gov, vt.gov, state.vt.us, and their sub-domains as well as many other domains used by State government. You can submit changes to DNS via a Footprints Helpdesk Support System ticket.  If you do not have access to Footprints, requests and inquiries may be directed to hostmaster@state.vt.us.

Registration of Vt.Gov domain names have to be reviewed and approved by Harry Bell, Director of Web Services. Please submit these requests to harry.bell@state.vt.us.

Once approved, the domain name will be registered and you will be notified.  We would ask that you do not attempt to register the domain name on your own.  We must make sure the proper name servers and technical contacts are included in the registration.
